Basic Dog Care Advice For The Newcomer

Whether you are considering getting a dog or you have one already, you’re already aware that taking care of a dog can be complex. This isn’t something that you can just do from day one. Read this guide for great dog care advice.

Be sure your house is dog-proofed. Don’t take a dog into your home without being sure that it is safe from top to bottom. Put up all of your cleaning supplies and medications, and be sure you put away any trash cans. Keep house plants out of his reach, especially if they could be poisonous.

Just as you need an annual physical exam, dogs do as well. Your dog can’t speak to tell you he’s in pain. An annual vet visit can help you find problems early.

When you have to train a dog, your home and/or yard is the right place to do it. You shouldn’t train your dog where many other people are present. People will only distract your dog, making it more difficult to train him.

Don’t let your dog out of your property without wearing a leash, regardless of how well he behaves. He can be scared away by some wild animal, or an unforeseen provocation with another dog can result in an unpleasant situation. Your dog’s actions and safety is your responsibility.

If you want to keep your dog outside, build him or her a small shelter. Especially if your dog’s feet get wet, exposure to very cold temperatures for long time periods can cause stress and other health issues. Keep your dog safe by giving him shelter.

Correct bad behavior the first time you see it from your dog. If you ignore any issue with your pet then later on it’s going to be harder to train it to obey because it doesn’t know any better. You could end up with a dog that hurts other people, so make sure you’re in control at all times.

You won’t just stop your dog from shedding on your carpet if you brush him on a daily basis. Your dog’s coat will be super shiny and beautiful if you brush them every day. Brushing distributes the natural oils of the skin throughout the hair coat for added sheen and softness.

Make sure that your dog is not kept outside your home all day long. Dogs are social creatures and need interaction with others. If you only have one dog, he can get lonely outside. Plus, bad weather can be health and even life threatening to your pet.

You should carefully trim the hair near the paws to avoid matted hair. Comb the tangles out before you start trimming. If you lack the confidence to attempt this, take the dog to a professional groomer.

Make sure you provide your dog with affection on a regular basis. As is the case with most things in life, owners often pay more attention to the bad behavior than the good. This often results in problems later. Instead make it a habit to praise your dog much more often than any scolding. Make it five times to any one. He’ll behave better more often this way.

If you have a dog that doesn’t look like it’s very happy because it’s always alone, think about getting your dog a friend. Dogs come from packs, so it’s in their nature to prefer spending time with a member of their own species. Matching a dog up with another of a similar disposition will make your dog very happy.

It is best to train your dog entirely by yourself. Everyone trains differently, and this can lead to confusion for your dog. Assign a person to do the training and then have others fortify what he learns by following the same guidelines and respecting the procedure.

This great knowledge you have gained will help you love your dog that much more. Love and patience are key to a happy relationship with your dog. You need to look around to find out more information to make your dog happy.
